Cymraeg – Ail Iaith /  Welsh - Second Language

Key Stage 3
The aim of this course is to raise the linguistical standards of pupils in Welsh, whilst providing the opportunity to develop their understanding of our traditions and culture. During the course pupils study a variety of themes where they are assessed in three main areas:- Oracy, Reading and Writing. During these themes, pupils have the opportunity to develop a
wider range of key skills and apply them to different areas of the curriculum and life.

Key Stage 4 - GCSE Welsh Second Language

The aim of this course is to ensure that every pupil has the ability to communicate effectively and purposely in their everyday life  when needed both orally and written. We aim to ensure that every pupil is conscious of the use of Welsh in Wales by developing positive attitudes towards the Welsh Language.


Year 10

Controlled assessment

Unit 3 – 30% of the final mark

Based on material set by the WJEC.

Pupils will complete 4 controlled assessment tasks:-

1 Speaking task

2 Written tasks

1 Reading task

Group speaking exam preparation

Pupils will be expected to work in groups of three.

Topics for the exam include:

  • Organising an event
  • World of Work
  • Bilingualism
  • The Area
  • Healthy eating/keeping fit

Exam preparation

Writing and reading exam

- Translating/correcting tasks

- Filling in grids

- E-mails

- How to write an article / memo  /note / report

Year 11

Controlled assessment

Unit 2 – 30% of the final mark

The area or Workplace

Pupils will complete 3 controlled assessments:-

1 Speaking task 3-5 minute presentation

1 Written task

1 Reading task

Exam preparation for Unit 1 paper and the Unit 4 group speaking exam.

Assessment Methods

Written Paper – 1 hour 20%

Assessment under supervision –60%

Oral Exam – (10 minutes) 20%
Two Tasks:

  • Oral Exam (pair/ group)
  • Discuss reading material as a stimulus to the oral exam.

There are two Tiers to the GCSE:

  • A* - D (Higher Tier)
  • C – G (Foundation Tier)
