Congratulations to past pupil who is heading to Oxford
Congratulations to Nathan Hewitt, a former pupil who is studying A-level at Coleg Sir Gâr. Nathan has achieved his lifelong goal of studying at Oxford, one of the world’s leading and prestigious universities. He will be reading ancient and modern history at St Hilda’s College this year following an unconditional offer.
The 19 year-old achieved excellent results in his A-levels last year, achieving all A grades in maths, history, government and politics and an AS in further maths. However, following an initial unsuccessful interview at Oxford and despite having the entry qualifications required by most top universities, Nathan decided to study an additional year to improve his prospects of getting into Oxford a second time.
Coleg Sir Gâr devised a tailored course for Nathan which included studies in history, further maths and an extended project which he used to research the Fourth Crusade and the conquest of Constantinople.
Nathan Hewitt said: “I was inspired to study at Oxford following a year 10 visit at school, it seemed like a nice place to be and the fact that the degree I’m going to be studying offers variety rather than focussing on one period of history, appeals to me.
“I’ve had great support from my lecturers and although I was anxious, my interview at Oxford wasn’t at all intimidating as they put me at ease.”
Vanessa Cashmore, head of A-levels at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “We’re so thrilled for Nathan and it just goes to show that with passion, commitment , excellent teaching and pastoral support, lifelong dreams can be achieved.
“Nathan is continuing his studies with us until the end of the academic year and we wish him all the very best in his studies at Oxford.”
