Year 10 pupils enjoy Let Maths Take You Further Conference
Ten of our Set 1 pupils attended the ‘Let Maths Take You Further…’ Conference at the University of South Wales, Trefforest Campus with Mr Richard Allen where they joined a group of pupils from Bryngwyn who were accompanied by Miss Demelza Bonnell.
The conference was aimed at able Year 10 Mathematics students with the aim of emphasising that mathematics can be both fun and challenging and that its study in the sixth form is a gateway to exciting university courses and a variety of careers.
They visited two workshops, the first of which focused on Game Theory. Glan-y-Môr competed against three other schools in the 'Prisoner's Dilemma' challenge and were victorious thanks to the strategy employed by the team. The second workshop gave the students an insight into the world of Operational Research.
During the morning all students had the chance to enter a quiz and Glan-y-Môr's very own Rhys Taylor was fortunate to be one of just three winning entries! His prize was an Amazon voucher. The day culminated in an entertaining talk on how Mathematics is all around us in the real world and can be a fun subject to study in further education. All the students were also encouraged not to be afraid of making mistakes as they rise to the challenges that studying Mathematics can present.
The students had an enjoyable day, having also had a chance to sample a university environment and the department will certainly seek to participate in similar future events. The pupils who took part were Abigail Cole, Tamzin James, Rachel Lewis, Joseph May, Ellie Pritchard, Rhiannon Taylor-Searle, Rhys Walters, Nikhil Seth, Tobi Sobola and Jordan Buzza.
