Prestigious Award for Glan-y-Mor Pupil
Annie Williams’ GCSE Coursework has been awarded 1st Prize in the WJEC Design and Technology Innovation Awards for 2015. At the awards ceremony at The Senedd in Cardiff last Friday Annie was presented with the award and a cheque for £250. Mr James, Lead Deputy Headteacher also accepted a plaque and a cheque for £150 on behalf of the school. Annie had been given the brief to design and make, for her Resistant Materials Controlled Assessment, an item of furniture which could be used for an outdoor activity. The brief also required the item to be easily folded away for ease of storage and transportation.
The design created by Annie, from 18mm thick Birch plywood folds up flat but on assembly forms a rigid ‘A’ frame design which is both practical and comfortable. The design was chosen by the visiting moderator in May 2015 and has since progressed through judging at the Swalec Stadium Cardiff and the North Wales exhibition at Bangor University to the Wales final at the Senedd.
Annie was delighted with the award and said ‘It would help her in securing a university place to study Engineering and pursue her chosen career in motor Sport engineering.” Annie is going to put the prize money towards buying her first car.
She is currently studying Design and Technology – A level at Coleg Sir Gar.
