NATIONAL Teen Tech AWARDS
Four teams from Glan-y-Môr are taking part in the National Teen Tech Awards, where they are being asked to be the innovators of the future. The four teams were selected after the whole of year eight were involved in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) theme day where they competed against each other to come up with proposals for inventions which would improve our everyday lives. The four teams are working on a range of projects, from guidance systems for wheelchairs and solar powered heated park benches to biometric house entry systems and concept dream catchers. Part of the challenge is to work with outside agencies and the pupils have already been involved in several activities, with one team visiting the engineering department of Coleg Sir Gâr and another visiting Schaeffler (UK) INA bearings where the pupils discussed their ideas with an engineering design team. The pupils also plan to visit SPECIFIC Industries in Baglan, a research company which specialises in renewable energy solutions. Support has also been offered for the project by Gower College Swansea and Paul Bulmer a STEM ambassador working for STEMNET which promotes the teaching of STEM subjects in school.
